About a week ago, Alistair and I took a scooter ride to the other side of Superstition Mt. to hike up a trail in the Gold Canyon. Our neighbour and avid hiker, Fred (from Sask.) leads all the hikes from our RV park and is quite the expert on all the scenic trails and such. You may wonder why a guy from Sask. would even know ABOUT the sport of hiking let alone be one!!!! But he has been coming down to Arizona every winter for the past 10 years so we trusted him.
It was a beautiful day and the trail well travelled and scenic as promised. We had a round trip 3 hour tour.....Met a lot if interesting hikers and learned a lot as well. The Petroglyphs were well worth the walk but some of the drawings had been damaged, unfortunately, so we only saw what remains.
It was very enjoyable and good exercise!!
Start of the trail
Teddy Bear Cholla Cactus
Looks fuzzy and soft but........
Mary at the end of the trail
Looking back up the Canyon Trail
Cactus "Tipping"....a popular sport in Arizona,
(especially by the Snowbirds)
Some of the Petroglyphs
I shared my lunch (nut bar) with the locals.
The Saguaro cacti stand all along the mountain sides and in the valleys. They can live
to be hundreds of years old and grow up to 40 feet tall. They can survive for 3 years
without water, because their trunks hold tons of water when it does rain.
And so endith the geography lesson for today ! :o)))))))
