Had quite an interesting experience Friday afternoon. While waiting for our scooter to be serviced Alistair and I decided to have cold beer at a bar near the Scooter Shop. The near by watering hole called "Jakes", was recommended by the mechanic working on our scooter.
As we approached "Jakes", we counted at least a dozen Harley's and other model motor cycles parked in a line by the bar entrance. This should be interesting, I said to Alistair and we walked inside. To my left in the dim lighting I saw a man minus most of his clothing, lying face down on what looked like a massage table with a girl tattooing his left calf. Looking straight ahead I saw a round table filled with men sporting leather jackets that read...."ARIZONA, HELLS ANGELS" so I quickly looked at the bar on the right and searched for a couple of bar stools, trying to appear calm and just one of the locals in for a cold draft.
We sat with our backs to the table of bikers and ordered our drinks from the bartender. The place was getting busy for 4pm on a Friday night and I saw a variety of "unique individuals" including a couple of women that we had seen just half an hour earlier at Walmart. They had caught Alistair's eye in Walmart due to their "unusual" attire. Definitely would have made the cut for the famous "Walmart Shoppers" list going around the Internet these days. As I drank my Guinness I noticed a few signs on the back wall of the bar.......such as "SAVE THE TA-TA'S" with a breast cancer pink ribbon in the background. Then there was "WHEN IN DOUBT....EMPTY YOUR CLIP" and my personal fav. was the black T-shirt with "SNOWBIRDS.......THE ALTERNATIVE WHITE MEAT'" written on it.
I nonchalantly looked around trying not to stare but very interested in the bikers who wandered about the place. Some VERY strange outfits, hair cuts, and facial hair from long beards to shaved heads and assorted colourful tats. We drank and chatted to each other, glad that we had left our helmets at the scooter repair shop thus avoiding any potentially embarrassing questions about "our ride". We finished our drinks and as we started to leave the bartender told us that the guy getting tattooed in the corner had bought the house a round of drinks and he placed another pitcher of beer for Alistair and another Guinness in front of me. I have seen on TV and in the movies, someone announcing "and a round for the house on me"....but it has never happened to me or Alistair before. So we drank our free drinks and politely thanked the tattooed man on our way out. Talk about feeling "out of place" and "a bit uneasy"!! Felt like I was in a scene from a movie and the next thing to happen was a biker starting a fight with Alistair just for fun.
Mary's favorite beer - " Kilt Tilter" (No, I'm not kidding)
